There are significant benefits of a WMS, outside of the warehouse itself…

Warehouse Management Systems are, obviously, useful for warehouse management. But that’s not the only function that they can provide. And in fact, in order to justify investing in a new WMS, sometimes it’s the benefits to a business outside of the warehouse itself that provide the tipping point.

Because your new WMS isn’t just going to take care of the everyday requirements that a warehouse has, it has other uses, to people other than the warehouse staff.

Visibility of daily transactions and KPIs provides valuable operational insights to the oversight level of a business. By monitoring daily transactions, executives can assess the overall efficiency and productivity of warehouse operations. KPIs can help them track performance against predefined metrics, such as order accuracy, on-time deliveries, or inventory turnover etc – and this kind of visibility can fuel data-driven decision-making, process optimization, and performance monitoring. All of which are crucial when it comes to streamlining a profitable business.

By comparing current performance against benchmarks or historical data, executives can quickly identify areas of improvement, recognize top performers, and address any issues that arise. This kind of evaluation supports performance management on a larger scale and allows for targeted interventions that will drive operational excellence.

Having access to real-time data and KPIs empowers C-level (and B-level and D-level) executives to make informed, data-driven decisions. By analysing transactional data and performance metrics, it’s possible to identify trends, patterns, and even potential bottlenecks – before they happen. This information helps in the optimisation of resource allocation and allows the business to identify areas for process improvement – aligning operational strategies with business goals.

Visibility into warehouse activities can support strategic planning initiatives. By analysing historical data and trends, it’s possible for managers to identify long-term patterns, forecast demand, and plan for future growth. In fact, accurate and up-to-date reports provide a much-needed foundation for strategic planning, helping executives steer the company in the right direction.

The ability to export and download reports allows for performance tracking and accountability – decision-makers can share reports with relevant stakeholders, to communicate expectations and track progress. Reports can provide a snapshot of performance, supporting effective intra- and inter-company communication. And this kind of transparency can help to foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Then finally, in this day and age of required audit trails, the ability to export and download reports is crucial for compliance purposes. Reports will provide documentation of transactions, inventory movements, and other critical information. They’ll serve as evidence of compliance with industry regulations, meeting of customer requirements, and adoption of internal policies. In case of audits or inquiries, having comprehensive reports on hand will streamline the process and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory obligations.

If you’re a warehouse manager who’s in the market for a new WMS, the ability to provide financial decision-makers with this kind of information (at this level of detail) might just be the selling point you’ve been looking for.
